CHICANO TODAY:  Life in Aztlan

Preface

The Monkeys

Once I heard a story about a group of monkeys that lived on a remote island. Every morning they would go to the beach because there was always a bunch of potatoes that would wash up with the current. And every day these monkeys would enjoy their meals.

One day one monkey decided to wash his potato before eating it and realized it tasted better washed and without the sand. Then all of the monkeys started to imitate this one monkey. Soon all of the monkeys in this island began washing their potatoes.

Then a more remarkable thing happened. These monkeys made it almost like a ritual to simultaneously pick up their potatoes and wash them together before eating them.

Other monkeys that lived miles away on another island too began to imitate this behavior at about the same time.

Soon without ever having contact with each other, all of the monkeys of these islands began to wash their potatoes simultaneously.

Using the story, a group in a large city were concerned about the high crime rate. They would hold weekly meetings and all think positive thoughts. Finally the crime rate went down.

I thought if monkeys can do this, imagine what would happen if we had similar thoughts and believed. What would happen if you had a hundred or more Chicanos / raza reading the same message everyday for one year or more?
